The grills also sizzle in a street-corner shop window in Newtown, hung with a red-brown garland of dried chillies and presided over by a strapping, white-jacketed chef with impressive mutton-chop sideburns. The busy two-room restaurant is the domain of a formidable waitress with a jet-black chignon who weaves expertly between the large family groups who frequent this place on weekends, stepping over strollers and setting down platters. You mightn't get much help with the menu or Macedonian and Croatian wines on the drinks list. Nor might you find out about the specials unless you ask. But you won't go wrong with a good mixed grill platter ($46 for two) of pork, chicken, cevapcici and a giant, oniony beef pattie, which comes with the requisite smoky taste, and an oniony "traditional" salad of potato and cabbage. Macedonian traditionalists may also go for a "peasant" or shopska salad of grated feta, cucumber and tomato ($10) and a dish of dried chilli flakes to sprinkle on the meat.
